Tips for Answering Law Firm Interview Questions

  1. When preparing answers to interview questions, avoid writing something down and going off it word for word. Just have an idea of the key points you want to hit with your answer so it doesn’t sound too scripted.
  2. Craft stories for your past experiences that highlight your skills and achievements (don’t be shy) but at the same time, make sure they are genuine. Don’t forget to use the STAR method.
  3. Don’t be afraid to show a little vulnerability. Nobody is perfect so just be honest when you’re asked about something that’s a work in progress. For example, if you’re asked about a time you failed or about your weakness, answer the question sincerely and focus on what you’ve learned and how you’re improving on it.
  4. Take your time in answering an interview questions. You might feel like you need to jump into an answer right away but you don’t. Listen to the question, nod and acknowledge you’ve heard it, and take a pause to think. Organize your thoughts before you answer.
  5. Keep your answers short and sweet – don’t ramble (and yes, this is easier said than done but try your best).
  6. If you don’t know the answer to the question, just say that. Again, honesty is key. You can say something like “That’s a great question, I don’t have an answer off the top of my head. Could I we circle back to this question at the end so I can have some time to think about it?” Hopefully, they forget about the question rofl or you have an answer by then.
  7. Speak clearly and at a good volume, and speak slower than you normally would. Trust me, you always speak too fast during an interview.
  8. If you don’t understand a question, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat it or to clarify what they mean. You can even paraphrase the question and ask if that’s what they are looking for.
  9. Don’t just sit there and let yourself be interrogated. If the question and your corresponding answer allows for it, follow up with a question of your own. If you’re asked about your favourite sport for example, and you say hockey, ask the interviewer(s) back if they’re a fan of the sport too.
  10. Above all, be yourself. Let your personality come through in your answers to the interview questions. Use hand gestures, show emotion, and smile!

Conclusion

Preparing for a law firm interview can feel overwhelming, but familiarizing yourself with common law firm interview questions and strategies for answering them will help you feel more confident and prepared. While you can’t predict every question, practicing your responses, refining your stories, and being genuine will go a long way. Remember, an interview isn’t just about answering questions but also about letting your personality shine, and figuring out if the firm is the right fit for you. So take a deep breath, trust in your preparation, and go into your interviews with confidence. You got this!
