Best Gifts for Lawyers

Find the ideal gifts for lawyers with this guide, showcasing thoughtful and useful items suited for both seasoned and aspiring legal experts.

Introduction

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought I would write about the best gifts for lawyers. Now that I’m 2 months into my articling year, I have been looking for gifts for my lawyer colleagues and I wanted to share with you some great gift ideas for lawyers for those of you who have that new lawyer, partner or aspiring lawyer in your life that you would like to gift something to:

1. Rocketbook

If you’re not aware, Rocketbook is a reusable notebook that allows you to save note pages to cloud services. I have seen several lawyers at my firm rock a Rocketbook (pun intended)! Of course, I have one too. Since lawyers take a LOT of notes, it’s an incredibly useful gift that’s also environmentally friendly. If you’re looking for a gift for a lawyer, this is a great pick.

Recommended Accessories:

Padfolio

Okay, let’s be honest. Being a lawyer means writing on hundreds of pages of legal pads so if your lawyer already has a Rocketbook (yes, they will still likely use a pen and pad at least some of the time), a traditional leather padfolio is a great option too. Wanna make it extra special? Get a personalized one with their name or initials on it!

Briefcase

You can never go wrong with a briefcase as a gift for a lawyer! Most lawyers I see don’t use a briefcase in their day-to-day work life, opting instead for a messenger bag, commuter backpack, or tote bag. But that doesn’t mean they don’t use or need one! Briefcases, especially ones that are more on the classier side, are still perfect for court!

Headphones

One thing I quickly learned after starting work at a firm is that lawyers talk on the phone A LOT! Whether it’s with clients, opposing counsel, or colleagues (it’s faster to call your colleague on the other side of the office than make that trip) so a pair of good headphones is a must!

Alternative:

Want a gift that’s a little more unique? Check out these open-ear headphones. I’ve seen several lawyers with these types of headphones. It rests just above your ear and delivers sounds through bone conduction so you can listen to music and take calls while still being able to hear your surroundings!

Planner

Ah, a staple in any lawyer’s office. It’s how they prevent their days from spinning completely out of control. A planner is a classic gift that would make any lawyer happy. There are tons of options to choose from when it comes to planners (think: daily/weekly/monthly? minimalistic? physical or digital?) so make sure to get one that suits your gift recipient!

Foldable Treadmill

Lawyers could all use a lot more exercise throughout the day. If they’re not going to court or client meeting, chances are they’re stuck behind their desks on their computer screens so a gift to help them stay active is always welcome!

Alternative:

Looking for a cheaper gift option? A stair stepper works too!

Insulated Travel Mug

Everyone knows lawyers can’t function without their daily dose of coffee or tea so this is pretty self-explanatory. With a travel mug, your special lawyer can have their beverage of choice hot and on-the-go!

Alternative:

Lunch Box

With how little time they have, you’d think lawyers would prefer to eat out for lunch but many surprisingly still bring lunch. And I’ve talked to quite a few who actually enjoy meal prepping. So if your gift recipient is one of those lawyers who prefers to bring a homemade dish for lunch, consider getting them a lunch box as a gift!

Recommended Accessories:

Wall Frame

Whenever I go into a lawyer’s office, the first thing I see is their law degree hanging on the wall in a fancy frame. Looking for the perfect gift for new lawyers? Well, this is it. Get them a classy wall frame to put their law degree in and help them proudly show off their accomplishment.

Succulent Plants

Succulent plants are a great gift because they add a pop of colour to a lawyer’s office. If you know anyone who needs a little help decorating their office, you should consider gifting them a succulent! The best part? They’re very low maintenance. And if you still have doubts about your recipient keeping one alive, well you can always go the artificial route.

Conclusion

There are so many gifts out there for lawyers but the gifts I’ve listed in this blog are things I’ve actually seen lawyers use in their day-to-day lives so I hope it’s helpful in narrowing down your hunt for a gift that’s functional, stylish, and perfect for the special lawyer or future lawyer in your life 🙂
