What are law school 1L flowcharts?
1L can be a really difficult year. It’s your first year in law school and you don’t quite know what to expect when it comes to exams because law school exams are completely different from any other exam you’ve taken previously. They are meant to test a whole different set of skills. Instead of testing your memory, it’ll test your ability to apply the law. And the law is very complex. There are so many tests and scenarios to remember that lead to more tests and scenarios before you can formulate a conclusion. That’s where flowcharts come in.
What benefits do 1L flowcharts provide?
Flowcharts are a visual aid. By breaking down each test or scenario or even process into simple yes/no questions, they will help you make sense of the materials you’re learning. So flowcharts are extremely helpful, especially come exam time.
Flowcharts are love, flowcharts are life.

The law is constantly changing (it also varies from one location to another and I’m from Edmonton, Alberta so the rules cited in these flowcharts may not apply in your jurisdiction). Plus, every school/course/law professor is different…so keep in mind that there may be information missing from these flowcharts and the concepts included in them may or may not be what you learned or may or may not be presented in the exact same way you learned them. Feel free to use them as an aid to studying but please be aware of the risks of using someone else’s study materials.
Happy studying and good luck with those exams!
